The consultation is to invite representations on the Bedford Borough Local Plan 2035. The Plan explains where new development is proposed to meet the borough’s growth needs to 2035. Several consultations have already taken place to invite views on the main issues covered in the document and consultation responses have helped to shape the plan’s policies.
Of particular note are proposals to re-use brownfield sites in the urban area of Bedford and Kempston, and the development of a new garden village at Colworth near Sharnbrook. The garden village will be served by a new parkway rail station delivered ahead of new housing to offer sustainable travel into Bedford and beyond and to intercept traffic heading south on the A6 destined for Bedford rail station. The plan’s strategy identifies growth in village locations, the majority of which will be identified by local communities in neighbourhood plans.

From there you can follow numerous links, in particular to the Site Assessment document which assesses each of the 600+ sites suggested for development and recommends whether a site should be allocated in the plan. The Sustainable Assessment Report looks at various alternative scenarios for future growth in the Borough and considers which overall mix of housing development would be most appropriate. The Local Plan 2035 Plan for Submission document now out for consultation follows 'Option 1' from the Sustainable Assessment Report.
